Russia is home to a wealth of history and a wonderful place to explore; with a landmass nearly twice the size of the United States of America there is certainly a lot to look at! Moscow is an obvious starting point for any visitor, with the nearly 1000-year-old city being home to any number of attractions – Red Square, which includes The Kremlin, for instance, and is surrounded by huge red walls and dozens of towers is a spectacular sight, as well as having an enthralling history, with it being where the tsars were crowned and home to Ivan The Terrible’s throne. Most of the attractions in Moscow come in the form of architectural delights – museums, cathedrals, theatres and more. An area likely to interest visitors is the street of Arbat, home to nobility and the most creative-minded in the past, and now home to a popular shopping area inhabited by numerous street artists and dancers. Basically – Moscow is a city with a lot of things to do, and without even making much effort visitors can find a whole host of attractions. St. Petersburg is another city begging for a visit, with the more traditional European feel making it the favourite of many a traveller who has been a little bewildered by the almost manic set-up of Moscow. Situated on dozens of islands over the River Neva, the ‘Venice of the North’ is home to another collection of wonderful architectural pleasures, one of which being The Hermitage – the biggest museum in Russia and home to a whole host of valuable relics from the country’s history, as well as ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, masterpieces by the likes of Da Vinci and Rembrandt all the way through to Van Gogh and Picasso. Visitors should also take a look at the Peter and Paul Fortress, erected by order of Peter The Great in 1703. St. Isaac’s Cathedral and Peterhof are other areas that should be visited by all who stopover in St. Petersburg. There are numerous theatres, circus acts, concerts and variety performances open to perusal all over Russia, and not just in the main cities, with information usually available from hotel receptions. The nation is home to world-famous circus acts and ballet performances, and it is well worth catching these events if they are playing in the area. Hunting and fishing trips, skiing excursions, cruises and long-haul train rides are other activities that visitors can take part in. Adventure tours are also becoming more popular with visitors to Russia, and more tour operators are offering the chance to partake in these styles of visit. All in all, there is so much to do in this massive country, and doing it all would take a long time - or a lot of visits! http://www.russiatourism.ru/eng/ http://www.russia-travel.com/ http://www.russiangateway.co.uk/ http://www.visitrussia.org.uk/
