Foreign tourists are allowed to bring their own cars into the country or hire cars from inside, with a road tax payable on entry. There are road-crossings between Russia and Finland at Vaalima–Torfianovska, Nuijamaa–Brusnichnoye and Rajajooseppi–Lotta and these are the most recommended for use. All countries with land borders to Russia have road crossings, but due to the nature of border disputes it is not recommended that visitors use these routes unless absolutely necessary, as a number of these borders have restrictions on travel and are known for high levels of car-jacking. However, plans to simplify travel and increase safety between disputed borders are underway. People entering Russia by car must have their visas registered with the hotel/motel etc where they are staying for the first night, and the car licence must be registered on the visa document itself. Vehicles should also be insured with Ingosstrakh (if they have not been insured prior to entry), which has offices at crossing points and in most cities, and drivers should purchase petrol coupons at the border. Motorcyclists are allowed to enter Russia, but it is suggested that cyclists do check with the Russian Embassy before doing so, just in case there are any stipulations. Eurolines, a coach service operating out of Victoria Coach Station in London, offers coach rides to destinations in Russia. For further details see their website www.eurolines.com.
